History of Bard on the Beach

Bard on the Beach had humble beginnings. Launched in 1990 by Christopher Gaze, it began as an equity co-op production, debuting with a single play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and drawing an audience of around 6,000. Today, the festival is recognized as one of the largest not-for-profit professional Shakespeare festivals in Canada, attracting over 79,000 visitors in its last season.

Over the decades, Bard on the Beach has grown from a single-tent event to a full-fledged summer festival featuring four productions presented in two theatres. The journey of the festival mirrors the timeless nature of Shakespeare’s works, resonating with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Each season, the festival explores the richness of Shakespeare’s writing, highlighting its relevance to our contemporary world.

Experiencing Shakespeare at Bard on the Beach

Bard on the Beach is not just about watching a play; it’s about immersing yourself in a unique Shakespearean experience. The moment you step into the custom-built theatre tents, you are transported into the world of the play, with the natural beauty of the landscape further enhancing this immersive experience. The use of the afternoon light for matinee performances and the transition to the evening sky for night shows adds a natural dynamism to the staging.

Each performance at Bard on the Beach is distinct, thanks to the unique stage setup. The actors perform against the stunning backdrop of the North Shore mountains, the skyline of downtown Vancouver, and the waters of English Bay. It’s a harmonious blend of art, nature, and culture that truly sets Bard on the Beach apart from other theatre experiences.

The Plays

At Bard on the Beach, the plays are chosen carefully each season to offer a diverse mix that appeals to a wide audience range.

Past productions have ranged from beloved classics like “Romeo and Juliet” and “Macbeth” to lesser-known works like “Timon of Athens.” The festival also takes creative liberties with the plays, with interpretations ranging from traditional to innovative adaptations set in different eras. This creative flexibility keeps the festival fresh and exciting each season.

Equally important are the diligent members of the production staff, who ensure every performance runs smoothly. They manage a broad spectrum of tasks, from stage management and prop coordination to safety protocols, each contributing to a seamless theatrical experience.
